ETHICAL GROWTH IN BUSINESS – EXPLORING THE ETHICAL DILEMMAS IN DELIVERING ADVICE

This session provides a reflective, inspiring, opportunity for ethical business and personal growth. Sustainable long-term growth is achieved through ethical growth strategies. In 2024, as always, growth hinges on two key pillars: Your people and technology.

This session will apply ethical decision-making frameworks you can increase efficiencies in. We will unpack the implications of different staffing models, tools for staff engagement, and the implications of technology and AI on financial planning practices and clients. This interactive session will deliver key take-aways that you can implement in your business to improve business efficiency and achieve client best practice outcomes.

Speakers

Chief executive officer, FAAA

Sarah Abood is Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Advice Association Australia (FAAA). She has over 25 years’ experience working in the financial services industry and she is a passionate advocate for financial planning.

Sarah has a deep understanding of the financial planning profession, and the demands of running a financial planning practice. This was gained from her nine years as CEO of Profile Financial Services, a privately-owned and self-licensed financial planning firm and FPA Professional Practice.

Prior to commencing as FAAA CEO, Ms Abood held the position of chief operating officer at HOPE Housing Funds Management. She has also worked in senior change and transformation, and marketing roles for some of Australia’s leading financial institutions. Sarah holds a BA from the University of Sydney, an MBA from Macquarie University (MGSM) and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

General Manager Policy, Advocacy & Standards, FAAA

Phil Anderson is the General Manager Policy, Advocacy & Standards of the Financial Advice Association Australia (FAAA). Phil had spent over 10 years at the Association of Financial Advisers (AFA), including most recently as CEO before the successful vote to merge with Financial Planning Association (FPA). He has previously worked for Netwealth as General Manager Governance and Advice, and Colonial First State, where he was the Head of Risk Management & Compliance for the CFS Advice business. Phil has been in the financial services industry for over 25 years, having also worked with AMP, MLC and Perpetual. Phil has been responsible for policy, including the Quality of Advice Review, and the implementation of the requirements of the Professional Standards legislation and the Royal Commission Recommendations. Phil has previously been integrally involved in the FoFA, TASA, Education/Professional Standards and the Life Insurance Framework debates including driving the development of submissions to FASEA, Treasury, ASIC, the Tax Practitioners Board and Parliamentary Committees. Phil is a CPA and has a Bachelor and Masters of Commerce along with the DFP and ADFP.

Managing Director, Burcheart

Sacha Burchgart, an award-winning financial adviser with over a decade of experience and founder of Burcheart, champions empowerment and financial literacy. Her strategy-first approach prioritises clients' financial well-being, fuelling her thriving practice through strong relationships and referrals. Sacha shares her insights through speaking engagements, panels, and podcasts, renowned for her unwavering commitment to excellence.

Director, RETRAC

Travis Carter is a business owner and mentor with a big passion for technology and the vital role it plays for small and mediumsized businesses. Travis is personally driven to improve the lives of our customers through his work to increase productivity, efficiency gains, and improved security. As Director for Retrac, Travis leads a motivated team that empowers their customers to adapt to the ongoing changes and enables them to service their customers better. Retrac’s Microsoft Gold Partnership recognises growth in the professional services industries and capabilities with the Microsoft 365 solutions which we all use today.

Senior Manager Financial Advice, ASIC

Julie is a Senior Manager in ASIC’s Financial Advice and Investment Management team within the Regulation and Supervision group. The team oversees the regulatory work associated with financial advisers, advice licensees, managed investment schemes, wholesale funds, platforms and managed discretionary accounts. Prior to this role, Julie was a Senior Manager in ASIC’s Financial Advisers team. Julie has more than 16 years of regulatory experience and prior to joining ASIC, Julie worked in financial services organisations for more than 15 years in both operational and compliance roles. Julie holds an Masters in Business Administration.

Boutique advisers, private wealth Managing Director

Gary is the Managing Director of Boutique Advisers Private wealth and works with highly successful individuals and families, specialising in business owners and family office clients. Gary has been in the Financial Advice industry for over 30 years and founded Boutique Advisers in 2003. Recently celebrating its 20-year anniversary, the team in Subiaco has grown to 25 staff and has developed a unique Value Proposition, seeing it win the FAAA professional practice of the year 2023. Gary is a CFP and an Accredited Advisor with the Family Business Association (FBA)

Managing Director, Ardentura Consulting

Dr Katherine Hunt combines her expertise in ethics with her passion for financial advice to lead global research projects with real world impact. Katherine holds a PhD in “The Law and Economics of Microfinance” from Erasmus University of Rotterdam, University of Hamburg, and the University of Bologna. Katherine has a strategic view of important issues, granted by a Bachelor of Psychological Science, alongside her Bachelor of Commerce and First Class Honours in Finance. The author of dozens of peer-reviewed academic journal articles, textbooks, and book chapters, Katherine leads through example in her quest to share knowledge and make the world a better place. Katherine has co-authored the textbook “Everyday Ethics for Financial Advisers”. Katherine has undertaken field research in places such as Pakistan, Bhutan and Nicaragua, and has visited 66 countries (so far), and surfed in more than 20 of those. 

Director, Alexis Compliance and Risk Solutions

Christina Kalantzis is the founding Director of Alexis Compliance and Risk Solutions, a financial services compliance and risk management firm based in Sydney. She has over 20 years experience in the financial services wealth management and distribution industry and extensive risk management and compliance experience. She provides advice to ASX listed companies on Financial Services Reform (“FSR”) and the Future of Financial Advice Reforms (“FOFA”) compliance, investment and risk management issues.

Commissioner, ASIC

Alan commenced as an ASIC Commissioner for a five-year term on 20 November 2023. He has more than 20 years’ experience in consumer protection, social services, law reform and justice in the public and not-for-profit sectors. Most recently, Alan was the CEO at CHOICE where he represented the interests of Australian consumers for more than 11 years. Earlier, Alan was the Executive Director of the Australian Law Reform Commission, the CEO of Legal Aid New South Wales, Chair of the National Legal Assistance Advisory Body, and Executive Director of the NSW Council of Social Service. From 2016 to 2017, Alan was a member of the panel for the Ramsay Review, which led to the establishment of the Australian Financial Complaints Authority and Compensation Scheme of Last Resort. He holds degrees in Arts and Law from the University of NSW, an Executive MBA from the Australian Graduate School of Management and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Chartered Accountant & Financial Planner, Financial Edge Group

Martin McGrath is a Certified Financial Planner based upon the Central Coast of NSW and founder of Financial Edge Group. With a background as a Chartered Accountant and a master’s degree in financial planning, Martin has over 15 years’ experience in the financial planning industry and is recognised as a specialist Retirement Adviser.

Senior Executive Leader, Financial Advisers, ASIC

Leah leads ASIC’s Financial Advice and Investment Management team within the Regulation and Supervision group. The team oversees the regulatory work associated with financial advisers, advice licensees, managed investment schemes, wholesale funds, platforms and managed discretionary accounts. Prior to this role, Leah was ASIC’s Senior Executive Leader, Financial Advisers. Leah has more than 13 years of regulatory experience and has worked on significant policy and enforcement initiatives. Leah is focused on improving access to good quality affordable advice and working to address conduct in the advice and investment management sectors that leads to poor consumer outcomes. Prior to joining ASIC, Leah was a practising financial adviser for over 10 years, representing several Australian financial services licensees and providing personal advice to retail clients. Leah holds a degree in Business from the Queensland University of Technology as well as a Graduate Diploma of Applied Corporate Governance.

FAAA Chair

David became chair of the FPA Board in May 2022 after a year as deputy chair and has been a financial planner and FPA member since 2003. He has completed a Diploma in Financial Planning and holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Distinction) from Curtin University. David runs his own self-licensed financial planning firm, Globe Financial Planning, based in West Perth.

FAAA Deputy Chair

Michelle is the Deputy Chair of the FAAA Board. Michelle has over 25 years financial services experience as a Senior Financial Adviser and is the founding principal and Managing Director of her South Australian based practice, Mybluesky. At the AFA she was the Vice President and served the AFA community in various leadership roles for over 10 years including State Chair and South Australian Director. Michelle is a Fellow Chartered Financial Practitioner (FChFP), Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (MAICD) and Certified NLP Practitioner (Bus. Comms). Michelle is a member of the Board Finance, Risk and Audit Committee of the FAAA.
